NIGERIA ECOLINGUISTICS ASSOCATION

IN COLLOBORATION WITH THE

PRESIDENTIAL TASK FORCE ON COVID-19

ANNOUCES ITS SECOND

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2021 (VIRTUAL PLATFORM)

Theme: Language and Politics of Environmental Ethics in the era of Covid-19 Pandemic

8th -10th September 2021

About the conference

Ecolinguistics appears to be an interdisciplinary combination of only linguistics and ecology. However, almost all areas of social life from economics, religion and politics to other fields have shown much influence on how humans treat each other and the ecosystems that life depends on, and all of these areas are influenced by language. Ecolinguists are now exploring whether the use of language in these areas leads to environmentally destructive tendencies and negligence of other species or whether they motivate people to accept and preserve the natural world. The study of ecolinguistics therefore touches many different disciplinary boundaries such as ecological studies, Economics, Political Science, Literary Studies, Mass Communication, Psychology, Sociology, History, Archeology, Philosophy, Theatre and Film studies, Religious Studies etc. When ecolinguists look into other disciplines they treat them critically – sometimes disciplines provide useful tools for analysis, but sometimes the conventions of the disciplines themselves are ecological destructive.

In the context of the growing environmental and health challenges facing the world, scholars and policy makers are expected to venture into multidisciplinary studies that are more problem solving. The NEA 2021 is an extension of our 2020 conference, which explored the ecological discourses and multidisciplinary approaches to environmental sustainability. This year’s conference is set up to specifically brainstorm on the relevance of language and politics of environmental ethics in relation to Covid-19 pandemic.
